Why Does God Feel So Far Away?

Do You Feel Forgotten?

  • 👉🏻 Do you look around and it seems like God is answering everyone else's prayers while yours remain unanswered.

    • Other people talk about God's presence.

    • They talk about hearing His voice.

    • They tell stories about how God showed up at exactly the right moment.

  • And you wonder: "Where is that God for me?"

    • Maybe you've been praying for the same thing for months. Or years.

    • Maybe you're waiting for healing.

    • Waiting for an answer.

    • Waiting for direction.

    • Waiting for God to change something that you can't change yourself.

  • 🦗And the longer you wait, the more personal the silence begins to feel. You start wondering if God has overlooked you.

    • Maybe He cares more about other people.

    • Maybe He's busy with bigger problems.

    • Maybe you've somehow fallen through the cracks.

  • 😔 And eventually, you may find yourself thinking: "If God really loved me, wouldn't I feel His presence more than this?"

The Pain is Real

  • 👉🏻 But there’s also a lie underneath this pain which is: God doesn't really care about me.

  • And the root belief underneath that lie is: If God cared, He would be more present and responsive.

  • In other words:

    • "If God loved me, He would answer."

    • "If God cared, He would intervene."

    • "If God were really with me, I would feel Him."

    • "If God were paying attention, this wouldn't be happening."

  • And that can be a particularly painful lie because there's a little bit of truth buried inside it.

    • We do want a God who cares.

    • We do want a God who is present.

    • We do want to know that He sees what's happening in our lives.

  • 📏 But it’s dangerous to use our circumstances—and our feelings—as the measurement for God's presence.

  • We start to think things like:

    • If we feel Him, He must be there.

    • If we don't feel Him, He must have left.

    • If He answers, He cares.

    • If He stays silent, He must not.

  • But God's presence has never depended on whether we can feel it.

  • And His love has never depended on whether He responds in the way or timeframe we expected.

God is Always Present, Attentive, and Compassionate

  • 👉🏻 Friend, that’s the biblical truth I want you to hold onto. His silence does not mean His absence.

  • And His lack of an immediate answer does not mean He has stopped caring.

  • Throughout Scripture, we see people who felt forgotten by God.

    • People who cried out and waited.

    • People who wondered how long God was going to remain silent.

  • The Bible doesn't pretend those feelings aren't real.

  • In fact, Scripture gives us an entire language for bringing those feelings to God.

    • "How long, Lord?"

    • "Where are You?"

    • "Why have You hidden Your face?"

  • Those aren't the words of people who don't have faith. They're the words of people who are hurting and still turning toward God.

  • And that's important.

  • 😢 Because sometimes we think that if we can't feel God's presence, we're doing something wrong.

    • Maybe our faith isn't strong enough.

    • Maybe we haven't prayed correctly.

    • Maybe we've sinned.

    • Maybe God is disappointed in us.

  • 📖 But Scripture tells a different story.

    • God doesn't abandon His children simply because they can't sense Him.

    • He doesn't remove His love when we enter a season of silence.

    • And He isn't less attentive simply because He's not responding in the way we're hoping He will.

  • Think about a child who falls asleep in the back seat of a car.

    • The child can't see the parent driving. They aren't watching the road. They may not even know where they're going.

    • But the parent's presence hasn't disappeared simply because the child can't perceive it.

  • Sometimes our experience with God is like that.

    • We don't know what He's doing.

    • We can't see where He's taking us.

    • We can't feel His presence the way we wish we could.

  • But that doesn't mean He's gone. Or that He’s stopped loving us.

  • 💗 God's character remains the same even when our circumstances change.

    • He is still present.

    • Still attentive.

    • Still compassionate.

    • Still faithful.

    • And still loving you.

  • So if you're in a season where God feels far away, you don't have to pretend that you don't feel that way.

  • You can tell Him. You can say:

    • "God, I don't feel You right now."

    • "I don't understand what You're doing."

    • "I feel forgotten."

  • And then you can add: "But I'm choosing to believe that what I feel isn't the whole story."

  • Because God's presence isn't measured by our ability to perceive it. Or if we think we’ve earned it.

How to Root Yourself in the Truth

  • 👉🏻 When you find yourself thinking, "God isn't here,” pause and change the statement.

  • Instead say: "I don't feel God here right now."

  • Those two statements may sound almost identical, but they're actually very different.

  • "God isn't here" makes a statement about God's character and presence.

  • "I don't feel God here" tells the truth about your experience without turning your experience into a conclusion about God.

  • 💯 Then take a moment to remind yourself: "My feelings are real, but they aren't the final authority on God's presence."

  • You don't have to manufacture a feeling of God's presence. And you don't have to convince yourself that everything is fine.

  • You can simply make room for the possibility that God is present even when you can't sense Him.

  • And then, if you can, offer Him one honest sentence: "God, I feel forgotten today. Help me remember that You haven't forgotten me."

  • That's enough.

  • And you may be pleasantly surprised by how He answers.
