Does God Really Like Me?

Why Does God Feel So Distant When You’re Struggling?

👉🏻 Many women carry around an unspoken belief that God merely tolerates them.

  • So every prayer feels intimidating.

  • Every mistake feels enormous.

  • Every quiet season feels like proof He's pulling away.

Do you find yourself constantly wondering:

  • "Is God upset with me?"

  • "Have I disappointed Him again?"

  • "Why does He feel so far away?"

😢 Sometimes we don't even realize we're asking these questions. We simply live as though God is emotionally distant.

  • We approach Him cautiously.

  • Trying not to make Him angry.

  • Trying not to ask for too much.

  • Trying not to become a burden.

And that's an exhausting relationship.

Why Is It So Hard to Trust God?

👉🏻 Friend, there’s a lie underneath the pain you’ve been experiencing. And that lie is this: That God is like the people who hurt you.

  • If you've experienced criticism…

  • Control…

  • Emotional distance…

  • Abuse…

  • Or unpredictable love...

It's only natural that those experiences shape how you imagine God. Our hearts often assume:

  • "Authority isn't safe."

  • "Love has conditions."

  • "People eventually pull away."

  • "If someone knows the real me, they'll reject me."

📋 Without realizing it, we begin assigning those same characteristics to God.

  • We expect Him to withdraw when we struggle.

  • We expect Him to criticize us when we fail.

  • We expect Him to become frustrated with our questions.

But here's what's so heartbreaking: when we’re doing that, we're no longer relating to God.

  • We're relating to the people who wounded us.

  • We've unknowingly placed their faces over His.

What Is God Really Like According to the Bible?

👉🏻 One of the most beautiful truths about God is this: He is completely unlike the people who misuse authority–or us.

Throughout Scripture, God's character is remarkably consistent:

  • He is gentle.

  • Patient.

  • Faithful.

  • Compassionate.

  • Steadfast.

  • Trustworthy.

Also, Jesus shows us the character of God very clearly:

  • When people were afraid... Jesus moved toward them.

  • When people were ashamed...Jesus welcomed them.

  • When people doubted...Jesus met them with patience.

💌 Again and again, we see a God who doesn't manipulate people into relationship. He invites them.

He doesn't shame people into transformation. He loves them as He transforms them.

💓 That's because God's authority isn't rooted in fear. It's rooted in love.

If you've spent years believing that God is unpredictable or emotionally distant, I want you to hear this: Those characteristics belong to the people who hurt you.

They do not belong to God.

God has never asked you to confuse Him with your abusers.

❤️‍🩹 In fact, part of healing is learning to separate His character from theirs. Because once we begin seeing God for who He truly is, it changes everything.

  • Prayer becomes safer.

  • Trust becomes possible.

  • Relationship begins replacing fear.

How to Separate God’s Character From the People Who Hurt You

👉🏻 This week, I'd like you to try something simple: Think about someone who significantly shaped the way you view authority.

  • Maybe it was a parent.

  • A pastor.

  • A spouse.

  • A teacher.

Now ask yourself: "Which qualities have I unconsciously assumed God has because this person had them?" Write them down.

Some examples could be:

  • Critical.

  • Unpredictable.

  • Distant.

  • Hard to please.

  • Quick to anger.

Then ask a second question: "Do I actually see these qualities in Jesus?"

  • Not what you've assumed. Not what you've feared.

  • What do you actually see when you read about Him in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and/or John?

⛓️‍💥 Sometimes healing begins when we gently separate God's character from the people who misrepresented Him.
